Eden Gardens — On a warm afternoon at the cricketer's most storied ground, Venu stepped out to face a full-strength TypeScript XI and did what few have managed before lunch: survived the new ball.

The innings began watchfully against the primitive attack — string, number, boolean bowled to a settled length — before the visitor opened up in the middle overs. Once the array took its second over, the field had stretched, and the boundaries came in clusters.

A brief examination from the bowler's two-parameter delivery in the sixth — speed and length now in concert — produced only a measured straight drive. Generics, sent down with classical Test length, were dispatched with the same authority in ODI and T20 lines alike.

"A clean strike of the bat throughout," remarked the match referee at the close of play. "Eleven balls bowled. Eleven deliveries cleared. The bat never beat. The wicket never threatened."

At stumps, Venu remained at the crease, unbeaten on eleven — a maiden TypeScript century, and the promising start of what one suspects will be a long career at the highest level.
